Educational Background

Douglas C. Smith earned both his B.S in Psychology (1996) and MSW (2000) from the University of Illinois.  He was awarded his Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Iowa in 2006.  Dr. Smith is a licensed social work practitioner, a nationally certified trainer for the widely-used Global Assessment of Individual Needs (GAIN), and has completed advanced clinical training in Motivational Interviewing.

Research and Practice Interests

Since 1996, Dr. Smith’ practice and research experience has focused on treating and preventing substance use disorders.  He has practice experience with varied substance misusing populations including: adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system, adults addicted to crack cocaine, and addicted mothers involved with child welfare.  From 2002-2007, he was the clinical director of the Adolescent Health and Resource Center, a SAMHSA-funded adolescent outpatient program, where he both supervised clinicians and oversaw the implementation of a study comparing the effectiveness of two evidence-based adolescent treatment models, Seven Challenges® and Strengths Oriented Family Therapy (SOFT). He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and makes several national presentations each year.

Current Research

Dr. Smith’s current research focuses on substance use disorders among vulnerable adolescent and young adult populations, including: conducting alcohol screening in pediatric settings, developing specialized treatments for young adult risky drinkers, and increasing the use of formal substance use disorder treatments among adolescents.  He is currently collaborating on a multi-site study funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) investigating the impact of a brief screening and intervention model, called the CyberMD, on adolescents’ risky drinking outcomes and treatment utilization.
